The ability to speak and write has always been considered as the main difference between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom. Many of our ‘young executives’ seem to have trouble spelling their own name these days. It is a sad reflection on our school system, where “expression” seemed to be more important correct spelling. Many times I have seem examples such as “hear” used instead of “here”. What amazed me even more, was that the teachers allowed it. Perhaps they didn’t know the difference themselves.

Curriculum change has been cyclical over the years. I was in the ‘grammar is important’ phase in the 60s. After that there was a ‘creative expression is better’ cycle. There have been regular moves back and forth since then.
