There are a number of tried and true activities we can take to improve our business. Most of these activities can be loosely referred to as marketing (or promotional) activates. Many home based businesses and start up businesses tend to ignore them, as they are too busy creating their product or service. However the new business trends should not be ignored if you truly want to increase the success of your business.
Your Web Site is hardly a new business trend….is it?
Some product seems to sell more easily on the Internet than others. Flowers have always been a popular product, but these days more and more product is selling well. But still the Home Based Businesses (over 67% of all small business in Australia is run from home) struggle with the concept of selling online (unless they have developed a catalogue typo of website). Consequently, they do not have any Internet marketing and promotion Strategies in place.
Whether you believe in the philosophy of Feng Shi or not, much of the Feng Shui principles can be successfully applied to business. Like most oriental philosophy, Feng Shui is based on common sense and natural activities.
When you are involved in the marketing and promotion of your business you do need to use your common sense as this is what most people will respond to. The many fancy and ‘ya – ya’ hype in marketing leaves potential customers cold. Perhaps Feng Shui can help your marketing and promotion strategies be more successful.
Introduction by Barbara Gabogrecan Many small businesses do not put much effort into marketing and communication. If they do, they are generally pretty restrictive and unimaginative in how they approach the topic. If you have a website then you have a major channel through which you can build your online marketing and promotion strategy. Don’t miss out on a relatively free opportunity to promote your business and yourself. The article by Tracey Jarvis on Website Marketing is very insightful. Traditional marketing methods Today, there are numerous marketing methods you can utilise. Sales results and studies show that conventional marketing methods are steadily losing effectiveness. They are becoming less effective as new and innovative ways to attract prospects, especially by small businesses, are being explored.
The New And Innovative Marketing Methods Social Media marketing methods are being used to promote all things in business, even though they were initially set up for personal interaction e.g. FaceBook and Twitter. Trying several types of marketing is usually the best way of eliminating marketing methods that fail, and determining which marketing methods are successful for you.
There can be a number of reasons why marketing and promotion is not
successful, particularly in the micro and home based business sector.
One reason is undoubtedly that the written word they use does not really
communicate their thoughts and messages clearly enough. Are your messages right or left brain ones?
My thoughts have always been that unless we learn grammar as children, we probably will never be good at it. As a former teacher, I was told numerous times (by the powers that be) that it is more important for children to write and express themselves and not to worry so much about grammar…. I don’t agree with that philosophy!
When I did English literature at University, my lecturer (who was really great) asked me “how can you spell the same word three different ways in the same essay?” As an artist and an author, I firmly believe that spelling uses the same side of the brain (left side) as that which is to do with logic, numbers, etc. As an artist, I use the right side of my brain extensively, so I can visualise, create and communicate my thoughts and feelings
well. BUT – the grammatical tools do not come so easily, especially spelling.
Added to that, I am a two finger typist, so words like ‘from’ and ‘form’ do get mixed up – but I put that down to my typing. Then I have another problem, I am slightly dyslexic when it comes to numbers and often intersperse them …I just never trust myself to write a credit card number or phone number correctly (even when I am reading it and saying the number out loud to myself).
I am not a good proof reader either as I tend to look at the total line and the one below, rather than at individual words and letters – now that may have something to do with the fact that I am always rushing to complete a job as I have another waiting to be done…but it has caused me plenty of pain over the years (I
especially get something wrong in a web address). On the other hand, I always re-read an email and make sure that it makes sense – seldom do I take short cuts in sentence structure, capitals, commas etc. in my emails. I treat them as I would a letter.
Do you have any regular emails that could be handled by templates – saving time and effort by just filling in blanks? Of course this is not going to work for some categories of correspondence. I never trust myself with numbers – I write it down once, check it twice and then cut and paste as often as I can. If you are interested in a set of quick tips and list of rules, let me know and I will be happy to share them with you.
There are a number of factors which could have influenced an adult’s ability in written expression not the least as you mentioned Barb, the effect of dominance in brain function. As an artist, the creativity you have at your command results in the exquisite products of your work. It saddens me that there are few who would see the beauty and power of the written word in the same light. Yes I agree true nerd headspace!
Since that scenario ‘written words seen as things of beauty’ is unlikely to happen at all in my life time, it is my small crusade to raise awareness of the importance of these marvellous things called words within a purely pragmatic focus.
Whether you are a stickler for correct grammar or are more interested in expression, there is no doubt that writing (communication) will always be very important, especially in the marketing and promotion of business. The ability to speak and write has always been considered as the main difference between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom. But to communicate successfully means that others who are reading what we write must understand our written word completely. The clarity of writing determines the professionalism of the individual.
Many of our ‘young executives’ seem to have trouble spelling their own name these days. It is a sad reflection on our school system, where “expression” seemed to be more important correct spelling. Many times I have seem examples such as “hear” used instead of “here”. What amazed me even more, was that the teachers allowed it. Perhaps they didn’t know the difference themselves.
Curriculum change has been cyclical over the years. I was in the ‘grammar is important’ phase in the 60s. After that there was a ‘creative expression is better’ cycle. There have been regular moves back and forth since then.
Are good writing skills – a dinosaur concept? Have good grammatical skills gone the way of the dinosaurs? Has the
meteor shower of technological advances blown sentence structure to oblivion? Or does your marketing and
promotion still require good writing skills?
My question for you is: when did being able to form a coherent sentence become
an optional extra? Who has the courage to be a revivalist of good writing skills? I do!
How to communicate in business is such an important topic, especially with today’s techno speak (like tomoz is going 2 b gr8 – arrrgggghhhhh)
One of the most frustrating things I have found with language (particularly customer service) is that we have all become ‘guys’…. “what can I get you guys?” “Well I’ll leave you to decide guys”, “how you guys doing today”…. the last time I looked I certainly wasn’t a ‘guy’ and if I am in a purchasing position, believe it or not, it will help me decide to go somewhere else.
Would you like to have more customers, greater consistency in your sales and cashflow? Are you afraid of getting a “no” and being rejected when you ask a potential customer for their business via your marketing and promotion?
Fear of rejection or fear of getting a “no” is the major reason preventing people from asking for the prospects’ business and closing the sale. Research shows that 90% of business people have a fear of rejection which stops them short of asking for the sale and this alone is costing Australian businesses millions in lost business each year!
